A mobile disk jockey (DJ) is different from a club or radio DJ. Although it is often considered an alternate career option, there are many mobile DJs around that consider this their primary career. Mobile DJs travel with their own sound equipments and play diverse sets of pre-recorded music, on a variety of media, for a specific audience. Mobile DJs usually tend to work on lease at private functions such as wedding receptions, school dances, and social occasions. Unlike many normal club DJs who play a fixed genre of music, mobile DJs often play more mainstream selections of music from multiple genres and they often take requests.

The most essential equipment that is required by mobile disc jockeys for performance consists of sound recordings in preferred medium, which is often vinyl records, compact discs and/or mp3s. Along with this, two devices for playback of sound recordings are also needed for the purpose of alternating back and forth to create continuous playback. This may be in the form of a record player, compact disc players or mp3 players. A sound system meant for amplification of the recordings is required for broadcasting the music. A portable audio system or a radio wave broadcaster would adequately perform the role of the same. Apart from this, a DJ may need a mixer that is used to mix the sound of the two playback devices and a microphone that is used to amplify the human voice. Headphones used to listen to one recording while the other is playing, without transmitting the sound to the audience is also strongly recommended, but not required. Other equipments may also be added. These include drum machines, samplers, effects processors, and computerized performance systems.
